B1 / The "Fundamentals of microstrip lines" box provides a means to study the following five topics:
1. Determination of the characteristic impedance of a microstrip line
2. Determination of the effective relative permittivity of a microstrip line
3. The relation between characteristic impedance and effective relative permittivity
4. Open-circuit stubs and short-circuit stubs
5. Inductances, capacitances and series and parallel resonant circuits.
B2 / The "Impedance Matching" box provides a means of studying the following four topics: i) the matching of a real load using a single-section quarter-wave matching transformer, ii) the matching of a real load using a three-section quarter-wave Chebyshev matching transformer, iii) the matching of a complex load using one open-circuit stub (single stub) and iv) the matching of a complex load using two open-circuit stubs (double stub).
B6 / The “Band-pass stub filters” box provides a way of studying the design of broadband band-pass filters with stubs in microstrip technology:
1. Design, synthesis and simulation of a fourth order filter with short-circuit stubs, having a centre frequency of f0 = 1.5 GHz and a band-pass width of BP = 750 MHz (Tchebyscheff filter with a bandwidth ripple of Am = 0.01 dB).
2. Replacement of the short-circuit stubs with (1) open-circuit stubs or (2) double short-circuit stubs. Simulation of both structures (filter with open-circuit stubs and filter with double short-circuit stubs).
3. Construction of the three filters using the puzzle pieces, and measurement of their performances using a network analyser. Analysis of the results.
